What To Expect After a Hair Transplant Procedure
Deciding to undergo a hair transplant surgery is a big step. First, know that the procedure works great on both men and women. It is also minimally invasive, low-risk, and generally painless with no complications.
That said, every patient is different. Therefore, it’s impossible to know exactly how long someone’s recovery or hair growth will take. It’ll take several months to see results and the recovery process and those results can vary dramatically from one person to the next.
This unpredictability concerns many patients following hair transplantation. They become worried when their redness and irritation lasts longer than someone else’s online. Some will even obsessively scour the internet for post-hair-transplant photos – comparing their results thus far to another patient’s after the same amount of time.
This is why we at Sistine Facial Plastic Surgery feel it’s necessary to set realistic expectations as to what to expect following a hair transplant procedure – in regard to both the recovery process and results.
Realistic Expectations After a Hair Transplant
We’ve established your miles will vary from another’s experience. Yet, we’ve found the following to be fairly accurate predictors as to what to expect after hair transplantation. These milestones are based on personal accounts we’ve observed from our patients and other research and studies we’ve reviewed.
First 1 to 4 Days
Most patients who undergo FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplantation recover very quickly in the first four days. The harvest sites at the back of the head heal quickly. The patient can expect to see some redness and irritation at the implant sites.
4 Days to 3 Weeks
The redness and irritation at the implant site slowly subsides. This process takes longer in some patients than others.
1 to 3 Months
Minimal hair growth may be observed but most will see little to no change at all.
3 to 6 Months
By this point, some degree of visible hair growth is usually seen. However, don’t be worried or disappointed if there’s still no noticeable difference. Many won’t notice hair growth for the first time until the 6-month mark.
6 to 9 Months
This is the most significant stage of hair growth.
9 to 12 Months
This is when most patients start to notice density and thickness. 90% hair growth should be seen at this point.
12 to 18 Months
This is when the majority of patients should see the final result.
Remember, Hair Can Take Longer to Grow Out in Some Spots
It is important to keep in mind that hair can take longer to grow out in some spots than others. The grafts grow at different rates depending on what stage of the hair cycle they’re in. It’s also vital to know that not every single graft may be viable.
