Cosmetic surgery is on the rise for men, which is of no surprise considering everyone wants to look their very best. Large number of male baby boomers are seeking surgical options to combat the signs of aging and enhance their appearance.
In 2010, eyelid surgery was the second most performed surgical procedure requested by men. Many men suffer from eyelid dermatochalasis—extra skin hanging from the upper or lower eyelid. This can lead to an aged, tired, and/or exhausted appearance in need of facial rejuvenation. Just a small amount of skin or fat removal in the upper or lower eyelids can open up the eyes and significantly improve the facial appearance.
The following will give you some additional information regarding blepharoplasty surgery for men. If you would like to schedule a consultation to talk about this procedure, please contact Leong Facial Plastic Surgery.
Is there a difference between male and female blepharoplasty surgery?
Although the goals of both upper and lower blepharoplasty surgery for men and women are similar, men tend to be a bit more conservative when it comes to the overall surgical outcome. Men tend to want to keep their masculine appearance and stay away from a deep eyelid crease.
Women tend to prefer a superior upper eyelid crease because it allows for easier makeup application. Most patients aim for a natural looking result, but this seems to especially be the case with men. Many would prefer a conservative approach, rather than risking the chance that the end result would indicate an operated or manipulated appearance.
It is important to note that the shape and position of the eyebrow in men and women differ. Men tend to have lower, straight and thick eyebrows that lack an outside arch. Women tend to have higher, slimmer eyebrows and prefer an outside arch. When performing eyelid, brow or forehead lift surgery in men, it is important to keep these masculine and rugged characteristics in mind.
Will surgical scars be visible?
Because the incision is made in the upper eyelid crease during eye lift surgery, it is often easy to hide the scar which gradually improves over time. When it comes to lower eyelid surgery, scarring is often less noticeable in women, since they can conceal irregularities using makeup.
Men may have a more difficult time hiding surgical scars, so the surgical approach and surgeon’s technique become vital. In this case, it is often beneficial to operate using a transconjunctival approach –the most common approach used in lower blepharoplasty procedures. During a transconjunctival lower eyelid procedure, an incision is made in the inside of the eyelid. This differs from the transcutaneous approach in which an incision is made just under the eyelashes.
