When facelifts first began in the early 20th Century, it was common for surgeons to create small incisions in order to make surgery less conspicuous and keep scars well hidden. Although this seems quite logical, a small incision can actually create a more visible scar due to bunching up of the skin.
In today’s world, highly marketed “Mini-Facelifts” frequently tout good results with a “shorter scar.” However, this claim is actually quite dubious because very often a “Mini-Facelift” incision is carried up onto the skin in front of the temporal hairline. Therefore, in reality, the length of the incision of a “Mini-Facelift” is often not meaningfully shorter and might actually be placed in a more visible location.
In addition, it can be more difficult to access deeper layers underneath the skin in areas such as the temporal region and neck. This can lead to a less rejuvenated, smooth or youthful appearance. Fortunately, advanced incision techniques have made it possible to create longer incisions that result in barely visible scars.
