The loss of hair can be a devastating and emotionally upsetting time for both men and women. In our culture, full, flowing hair is often considered beautiful and appealing, so when the loss of hair occurs, self-esteem and confidence may decline. Fortunately, our Pittsburgh hair transplant techniques have improved over the last couple of decades, resulting in better and more natural looking results.
FUE (follicular unit extraction) and the strip method are the two primary ways to extract the donor hair grafts to be implanted. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed in detail during your consultation. At Sistine Facial Plastic Surgery, we also offer an advanced approach to hair transplantation involving a machine that quickly and effectively extracts hair units. We believe in staying on top of all the recent advances in the field of hair loss to ensure the best possible outcome with the most natural looking result.
The following will give you some additional information on hair transplantation surgery. If you would like to schedule a consultation to talk about this procedure, please contact Sistine Facial Plastic Surgery.
What causes hair loss?
Hair loss is often the result of a hormonal condition in which hair follicles fail to react to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – an androgen responsible for various male characteristics including maturity during puberty. When this occurs, hair falls out and sadly there is no way to stop the process, but hair transplantation can offer a solution and restore hair to its previous full state. A current medical condition or medication can also lead to thinning hair. A medical work up including hormonal or blood testing may be required to determine the underlying causes of your hair loss.
During hair transplantation, hair follicles that still respond to DHT (usually located on the sides of the head and back) are extracted and repositioned to thinning, balding areas of the scalp.
When should I consider hair transplantation surgery?
The instinct for most patients is to seek hair transplantation surgery as soon as they start noticing baldness—however, that may not be the best solution at that moment. Hair loss often continues to worsen with age. If you have grafts implanted on the top of your head in your 20s, by the time you reach your 40s, you may notice a gap of hair loss in between the top and back of your head which would require another surgery to correct. During your consultation, Dr. Leong will determine the best time for your hair transplant surgery based on your current state of hair loss and your family’s prior history of baldness.
HAIR TRANSPLANT MEDIA - DR. PAUL LEONG
Who performs the hair transplantation procedure?
Dr. Leong has a distinguished and skilled group of hair transplantation technicians that work with him in Sistine’s Southside location. They have performed hundreds of hair transplantation procedures on patients with various ethnic backgrounds, so have the experience and ability to ensure a fantastic result.
One of the most crucial aspects of hair transplantation surgery is obtaining good, usable grafts, so Dr. Leong has acquired a qualified team to do just that. Top quality hair transplantation always involves a high-performance team working together, and at Sistine Facial Plastic Surgery, we have worked hard to have that team in place for you to achieve arguably the best hair transplants Pittsburgh has to offer.
Do products like Rogaine® work?
Products such as Rogaine or Propecia (Finasteride) stimulate and encourage hair to grow and thicken. They do not cure baldness, but they do help to reduce the effects of hair loss. These products may be prescribed after your surgery to further promote hair growth.
